St Catherine’s Sailor Tom Pollard has just finished 5thBritish Sailor in the recent Laser 4.7 Worlds held in Nieuport Belgium.

Travelling as the Clipper Bursary winner and with his father, Tom produced some excellent results over the week away. His father , Jon, comments…

“….Tom had a very enjoyable and positive time at the Laser 4.7 Worlds. His best day sailing was on day 3 when he got a 19th and 4th position  – one of the highest by any GB sailor. Sadly on day 4 the winds were light and patchy with huge shifts and the results moved him down from gold to silver fleet for the last 2 days. He sailed well in silver to finish 26th and top GB in silver fleet and 5th GB boy overall. It was a great event with sailors from 45 countries.”

We look forward to welcoming Tom back after racing in the Nationals with Jon, and wish them both the best of luck.

A group of over 45’s have already signed up for a fun weekend hosted by the Guernsey Yacht club, but if you have not done so yet and would like to go, please contact Martin …   spells706@gmail.com.

There is limited availability on the trailers already booked so hurry if you want to catch a lift.

Dear Competitors, Friends and Helpers,

The 64th Annual regatta is this weekend and the weather is looking promising for a weekend of sailing, sun and dining at the club.

The house committee have asked you to sign up for the weekend on Friday with a £15 all inclusive deal for all the meals served from Friday eve (Gorey butcher Hot dogs, ) Saturday lunch and eve BBQ, and Sunday Lunch buffet.

Sailing will commence on Friday from 1900hrs with one race for single handed boats or Crews helming their skipper’s boats.

On Saturday we start with the first Pursuit Races starting at 1000 with the clubhouse line in traditional fashion,  followed by Peace cup and Mulheman and Inflatable Water Slide Veterans before lunch and RNLI pennant and Bolitho (2 races) in the afternoon.

Sunday will commence with the Marrett at 1000hrs, the transition fleet (club oppies) in the Trophy De Paris at 1030,  His and Hers race at 1100hrs and the Ladies Race at 1145 before lunch. Lastly the Ann Port Race 1 and 2 from 1400

A sign up sheet for club boats will be posted at 6pm on Thursday at the club if you would like to borrow one.

It will very busy weekend at the club house this weekend, we hope that you can make it to race, spectate or help out in any way.

SCSC 64 regatta programme 2017 v1

As the 160th Logicalis Gorey Regatta approaches,  I encourage all entrants to get their forms before the final late entry date (Thursday 29th June .) This year we have a full weekend of sailing and activities with the new addition of Thai on the bouncy castle for sale pier on Saturday eve. from 6.30pm.

As usual your entry gains you a ticket for the prize giving meal at the Moorings hotel on Sunday.

All entrants and helpers will receive a free 160th commemorative book.

Gul Clothing and Wetsuit Orders

Karen Roworth has kindly taken on the Gull orders, so if you would like to order any clothing, wetsuits, buoyancy aids or booties etc through the club with very favorable rates (just over half stated price) please get in touch.

She intends to order every month starting on the 28th June keeping postage to a minimum with larger orders.

Do get the exact size and color, as well as the catalog number, and ensure that you have checked the size chart. regrettably orders can not be sent back, and no refunds are possible. Please submit payment before you collect.

Next Sunday’s Double Handed & Dayboat event is all about you.

The race bouncy castle for sale committee are organising 3 back to back races, with long spinnaker legs and clear breeze.

It’s definitely worth dusting off that trapeze boat and joining in!

First race starts at 11am, with a briefing at 10:15am so please be ready so that we can fit the whole programme in.

The Commodore’s cup will be an Open series of 3 Races back to back starting at 1000am.  See sailing instructions for courses.

Lunch will be hosted by the house Committee after sailing when all are ashore. £5 for adults and £3 for under 10’s.

Please see one of the race committee if you are unsure of the conditions, or if you would like to borrow a club boat before 0900.

SCSC Jubilee Regatta is this weekend …

Racing starts at 11am with 3 races back to back followed by lunch hosted by the house committee at the club.

Well done to the Tony Cavey team for gaining RYA Recognition and passing the bouncy castle for sale inspection with flying colours a true testament to the hard work and dedication of all of our fabtastic volunteers at the club.

Great club, great people, come join!

2017 JERSEY CLIPPER BURSARY GOES TO ONE OF BRITAIN’S TOP YOUNG SAILORS

St Catherine’s Sailing Club assistant instructor Tom Pollard has been awarded the 2017 Jersey Clipper Bursary, worth £1,000.

The award, made in association with the Jersey branch of Swiss bank UBS, will help to fund the 16-year-old’s participation representing Great Britain in the Laser 4.7 World Championships in Nieuwpoort, Belgium, in July.

In addition, thanks to an Inflatable Water Slide anonymous donation, the Jersey Clipper Bursary trustees have been able to present a runner’s up award of £500 to 17-year-old Hobie Cat sailor Ollie Voak who is travelling to Noordwijk in Holland to race in the European Multihull Championships.

‘I feel very honoured and proud to be selected as the winner of the Jersey Clipper Bursary,’ said Tom, ‘and I look forward to the opportunities it will provide.

‘Since my application I have also been selected to represent Great Britain in the Laser Radial Youth World Championships taking place in Medemblik, Holland, in August, and with these international experiences I hope to inspire the younger members of St Catherine’s Sailing Club and help to improve the standard of sailing.’

Ollie Voak, who like Tom goes to Victoria College, has been racing Hobie Cats since he was ten and has recently been busy training for the European Championships in July.

‘I have gained first position in the local Spring Series Hobie Spinnaker class and, with upcoming training days with top UK multihull coach Brian Phipps, I believe I have a great chance of successfully representing Jersey at this event,’ he said.

‘Competing in the Europeans against world-class sailors of many different nationalities has long been a personal goal, and the award will make a big difference to me in funding this exciting challenge.’

The annual Jersey Clipper Bursary, a legacy from the three Jersey campaigns in the Clipper Round-the-World Race, was established in 2007 through the generosity of Dandara, Les Pas Holdings and UBS. Further funding has since been provided by local boat-owner Nigel Philpott, the Island’s three former Harbourmasters – Capt Roy Bullen, Capt Brian Nibbs and Capt Howard Le Cornu – and, most recently, UBS.

We all at St Catherine’s sailing club wish both Tom and Ollie congratulations, and the best of luck in this year’s events.
