Sailing Committee March Newsletter

This year we thought it would be useful to send out a monthly message to highlight upcoming events plus any useful updates and information.

As well publicised the sailing season starts in just over one weeks time on Sunday 24th March, so if not already done so, now is the time to check your boats to make sure everything is working properly and fittings are secure. We want to highlight that due to tidal conditions the start time for the first race  is early at 9am and the Race Officer will not have much scope for any delays so please do arrive early.  Racing is for the Amy Cup and ANRP Mug split into Fast and Slow Handicap racing which will be held over 4 weekends with 5 races out of 8 to count.

Our first Regatta of the year is on Easter Monday with a 3-race series starting 10am. This is always a popular event particularly as there might be some chocolates involved! In the run up to this we have some top UK ILCA / Laser race coaches arriving on the 29th for a four day training camp. This is a superb opportunity to learn new skills from the best. There are still a few places open so be quick and sign up on webcollect.

The RCIYC Nick Cousins Memorial Spring Regatta takes place over the weekend of 13th/14th April. We need volunteers for rib duty, beachmaster and also cars to tow ribs to and from St Aubin. Please contact Justin Horton who is co-ordinating, your help will be much appreciated. Sailors need to organise themselves and where necessary collaborate getting dinghies to and from the venue. Entries are through Eventbrite with a deadline 8th April. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/the-royal-channel-islands-yacht-club-18654642776

We would like to highlight some useful resources on the club website under the Racing / Notice Board. Here you will find the Programme of Events, Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and Handicaps. Also, this page will be where we post any amendments so keep an eye on this.

As you may have seen in the press, Ports of Jersey are conducting a survey of the breakwater and slipway following damage from Storm Ciaran. We are in close communication with PoJ as restricted access will impact the running of our events. We will keep you informed of any changes to our programme.

Please could all sailors make sure their trolleys are clearly labelled with their name and sail number. This helps the shore party identify trolleys as sailors return to shore and speeds up the process.

An advance thankyou to all members helping with race duties this year. We recently held an excellent briefing session at the club to share knowledge on the running of club events. If anyone missed this and is unsure of their duties and what is involved, please contact a member of the Sailing Committee.

Finally if you have duties assigned to you on Dutyman and have not yet accepted or swapped your duty please do this as soon as possible so we can avoid last minute complications.

In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you on the water – Happy Sailing
