Access to St. Catherine’s on Sunday 15 June 2014

Festival-of-Cycling-BadgeDue to the Jersey Festival of Cycling this weekend a number of roads around Gorey and St. Catherine will be closed on Sunday. Access to St. Catherine on Sunday 15 June will be via La Rue du Villot and then turn left at the bottom of the road at the junction of Rue du Moulin and Route des Catherine.  This junction will be marshalled and vehicles may have to wait for a marshal to grant permission to turn in order to make sure that you do not turn when the cyclists are in the vicinity.

On exiting St. Catherine’s traffic will have to go back up Mont des Ormes signposted Rozel and then back up to La Rue du Villot.  There will be a Road closed sign just at this junction to remind people that they can only go back up the normal route to Rozel. Having fun in the sun at St. Cath’s

Saturday 24th May from 2 pm to 5 pm is our first Friends and Family open day. Please try to think of a few people you know that may like to find out about
St Catherine’s and what we get up to, then invite them along, simple! By contacting them directly and perhaps sending them the club invite.   It will be fantastic if as a direct result of the day we can encourage more people to  get involved with the club and start sailing.

The format for the afternoon will be very informal and it Friends and family day 2014will be fine if people just want to drop in for a while. We hope there will be as many club members as possible  on hand to enthuse about St Catherine’s. There will be food on sale, probably burgers, hot dogs, cakes, tea and coffees.  Membership forms and information will be available. Perhaps some sailing gear for sale as well. Weather permitting we hope to organise some short RIB rides, you may also want to take your friends or family for a quick sail. We’ll also get boats rigged up on display to show people the training fleet.  Also feel free if you want to put a boat on display for sale as well, as open day is always a good chance to do this!

To give an approximate idea of numbers for planning it would be appreciated if you could e-mail Paul Raimbault to say if you think you make it, plus include an estimated number of any guests  if you have invited some. Though obviously feel free to come down anyway (even if with no guests) as the more the merry in terms of making the club feel welcoming.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Liberation Day Regatta 2014

The Liberation regatta takes place on Friday 9th May 2014 and includes lunch at the club. The Vega pursuit race will take place starting at 10:00. All sailors and family are welcome, BYO beer & wine if you wish. In the case of inclement weather lunch will still be served in the club between 1200 & 1230, we would love to see you all.

After lunch two more races will be held back to back first the Begal then Liberation trophy. We only run two pursuit races during the year and they are great fun, it may seem complicated at first but once you have started it is just great fun, please ask us at the club to explain the start sequence if you are unsure, also you may like to download this information sheet.  This link is to the RYA Pursuit race information sheet.

Did you know….

That the St. Catherine’s Liberation Day regatta has been held every year since the club started 61 years ago.  The 3 races held on Liberation day are The Vega, The Beagle and The Liberation Day Trophy all with historic significance to the Liberation of the Channel Islands.  First race of the day is the Vega named after the Red Cross Ship SS Vega that made several trips to Jersey with Red Cross parcels, then on 9th May 1945 HMS Beagle arrived at St. Helier harbour and later that day the island was liberated, hence the order of our races!

Condor Ferries – Club discount

Condor Ferries have had many requests over the last 12 months from sporting clubs for a reduction in fare to travel to take part in sporting events off island.  Condor Ferries have been talking to the States Education, Sport and Culture department and are working together to provide sporting clubs and associations with cheaper travel.

Rather than having individual bouncy castle for sale accounts for each sporting club all will now book through the States Education Sports and Culture department and will be able to obtain a 15% discount on travel to take part in a sporting events off island (proof of event and participation may be required).  This will put all sporting groups and associations on a level playing field.

As such it is required that St Catherine’s Sailing Club use the same process as other sporting groups and associations and as of the 1st April 2014.

Any club member wishing to take advantage of this discount offer needs to contact Louise Perkins or Angela Raimbault who will complete and process the form for you.
