NEWS UPDATE SAILING: NAT WEST ISLAND GAMES

A big thank you to all those who have helped so far prepare for the Island Games. Still much to do….

All 52 new  sails have had  numbers, sponsors  and stickers carefully  applied  ready for the    competition.

Constable Pallot Inflatable Water Slide and the team at the Parish Hall  of St Brelade were able to offer the use of  their hall: For two days the hall took on the role of a sail loft. A team of volunteers  worked solidly and the task was achieved.

All  the 26 new lasers ( Each with standard and radial rig) have been unpacked and moved to the Fort

The event will be a major logistical exercise with start boats, rescue boats, onshore support and transport to and from the Fort all being provided.

Help is needed from 2pm on  Sat 20th June at St Aubins Fort to finally  assemble boats and make the site a welcoming place. Just turn up even if just to support and see the site!

The sailing venue at St Aubin’s Fort is taking shape.  Twenty six brand new laser dinghies await the arrival of the competing sailors. All that is needed now is fair winds!

The sailing event will take place in St Aubin’s Bay from Sun 28th June to Thurs 2nd July with results and coverage streamed onto screens onshore.

Friends & Family Open Day –

Following a very successful day last year we are holding our second friends and family day on Saturday 23rd May from 10:00 a.m.

(apologies we have had to postpone so not taking place this Saturday 23rd after all )

All club members are encouraged to drop-in during the day and also to invite their family or friends along to the club too. Perhaps those that have shown an interest in St Inflatable Water Slide Catherine’s in the past or are thinking about getting involved with sailing, though would like to know more first. The day will be a good chance for people to find out what we are all about by chatting to you and being introduced to other club members. There will be plenty of information on hand about the club and training opportunities There will also be the chance for you to take family and friends (weather permitting!) for a sail with RIB’s on the water to provide cover. Sailing gear and the new club hoodies and rash vests  will also be on sale.

In Memory of John Speller

It was with sadness that I learned last weekend that John Speller (aged 83) passed away. John was an Honorary member of St Catherine’s Sailing Club and a real stalwart for many years, contributing his energy and enthusiasm. He held the position of Sailing Secretary and was also Commodore from 1981 to 1982. During the 1980’s when the club was extended by bouncy castle for sale members, it was John who was instrumental in achieving this. John was also one of those industrious dads that built his own mirror dinghy, which then encouraged his sons to get into sailing too. I know you will all join me in extending heartfelt condolences to Jeff, Martin and their families.  The club has a proud history and John’s part in that is an important one.

Liberation Day Regatta

The Liberation regatta takes place this Saturday 9th May and includes lunch at the club. The Vega pursuit race will start at 10:00. All sailors and family are welcome, BYO beer & wine if you wish.

After lunch two more races will be held back to back first the Begal then Liberation trophy. We only run two pursuit races during the year, it may seem a bit complicated at first but once you have started it is just great fun, please ask us at the club to explain the start sequence if you are unsure, also you may like to download this information sheet.  This link is to the RYA Pursuit race information sheet

Did you know….

That the St. Catherine’s Liberation Day regatta has been held every year since the club started 62 years ago.  The 3 races held on Liberation day are The Vega, The Beagle and The Liberation Day Trophy all with historic significance to the Liberation of the Channel Islands.  First race of the day is the Vega named after the Red Cross Ship SS Vega that made several trips to Jersey with Red Cross parcels, then on 9th May 1945 HMS Beagle arrived at St. Helier harbour and later that day the island was liberated, hence the order of our races!

There will hopefully be a great turn out of dinghies from St Catherine’s for some excellent racing.

If you’re not sailing please consider helping with the RIBS or launching. The dinghy fleet will launch and recover from the RCIYC and help is needed as follows;

  • 4 people per day to drive and crew our two RIBS (TC & BJP), drivers must hold RYA PB2 qualification
  • 2 people per day to run the slipway including signing in and out sailors as they launch and recover.

Races begin at approximately 12:00 each day so you will need to be available from around 10:30 with an expected finish time of about 16:30. If you can help then please contact Will Carnegie will@willcarnegie.com. Places will be allocated initially to those with children afloat and then on a first come first served basis

RIB naming competition

We are looking for a name for our 4 metre RIB, which will be launched soon. This is great for the club as it will bring the RIB fleet up to full strength as we prepare for another busy season.

The naming competition is open to all U18’s and a £20 Gul voucher will be awarded to the winner. Please e-mail Will Carnegie by latest Saturday 18th April at  will@willcarnegie.com with your ideas

Easter Regatta

Its the Easter Regatta this Monday at St Catherine’s our first Regatta of the season so hope to see you there! … fingers crossed that the weather is on our side.  The plan is Inflatable Water Slide to start early at 9:30 due to a falling tide, so please aim to get there in good time for rigging and then a briefing at about 9.00 a.m.

House Committee are organising lunch after 3 back to back races planned for the morning.

Sailing instructions, list of prizes for the year and handicaps are all now updated and published here  https://www.scsc.org.je/?page_id=26  on the general sailing information page.
