When?  Monday 23rd August, meet at 2PM
Where? St. Catherine's Sailing Club

Please contact Dan Williams ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) for more information and to register!

St. Catherine’s Sailing Club is preparing to host the biggest junior regatta held in Channel

Island waters over the August bank holiday weekend when the club will play host to the
annual Fairbairn Trophée des Isles Regatta.

The Trophée des Isles is the biggest junior sailing regatta to be held between the Channel
Islands and France with competitors sailing in Optimists, Laser 4.7 and Laser Radial
classes. More than 60 junior sailors aged from 8 to 21 will race for their club; the team
with the most points from all its classes will win the top prize, Trophée des Isles. Individual
prizes will also be awarded for class and best in each age group.

Racing will be held over two days at St. Catherine’s with the Bank Holiday set aside for the
visiting teams to discover Jersey. Normally the regatta is contested between the sailing
clubs of St. Malo, St. Catherine’s & Guernsey Yacht Club but this year the Isle of Wight,
hosts of the 2011 Island Games, has entered the regatta and their team will be travelling to
the Island at the end of the month.

David Carter Commodore at St. Catherine’s Sailing Club said “we are delighted that the
Isle of Wight will be competing this year, the Isle of Wight produce some of the worlds
best sailors. The fact that they see this event as one to bring there team too shows the
standard of competition and sailing excellence that we now have in Jersey”.

David went on to explain “St. Catherine’s has been an RYA Volvo Champion club for 6
years now and we have just be reaccredited, The Volvo RYA Champion Club Programme
recognises those sailing clubs with a commitment to youth sailing and race coaching.
It aims to encourage young sailors at grass roots level, to stay in the sport and learn to
compete. Thanks to this programme St. Catherine’s is now producing top flight sailors to
get us back into the medals at these sort of events. This year our sailing academy has
had just over 130 children learning to sail, being taught by qualified instructors that have
come though the club programme”

Last year the Trophée was won by St. Malo by a very close margin, “we will have our work
cut out for us this year” David said “with two very strong teams, although we do have the
home advantage, and we will do all we can to try and win the Trophée for Jersey”

The Trophée des Isles is hosted on a rotating basis by the Sailing Clubs of St Malo,
Guernsey and Jersey; this year it’s Jersey’s turn and St. Catherine’s have being working
on the event planning for the past six months. “Managing this number of junior sailors,
their boats and families has been a mammoth task for the club. During the event
launching and recovering all these boats on the small slip at St. Catherine’s is going to be
a challenge” said David Carter.

Most of the visiting teams will be staying with host families, and a party atmosphere
will reign at St. Catherine’s for the entire weekend. Cathy Moisan of St. Catherines
Sailing Club who has been organising the visiting teams said “it has been a lot of work
to find accommodation for so many visitors tying in the travel plans and arranging
the catering and shore events, I am overwhelmed by our club members generosity in
offering their spare rooms and offers of help at the club over the weekend. We are also
grateful for the support from Fairbairn Private Bank and Condor Ferries, it is this support
that has made it possible for the Isle of Wight team to be able to travel for the event”.

The event is making full use of social networking for the first time, led by St. Catherine’s
web master Dan Williams (17), who is sailing for the St. Catherine’s Team in the event
said “St. Catherine’s Sailing Club has been using online applications for some time
now to manage its duty rosters and publish race results and the Commodore’s blog.
Facebook has also been part of the clubs communications so it made sense to set up a
facebook page for this event so that all the sailors can communicate before the event,
some in French! Most of our members use the club Facebook page, but some of our older
members still prefer to look on the notice board, which is fine as well! You can find us at
www.scsc.org.je where you can join us on facebook”.

Saturday evening a hog roast and prize giving will be held, many teams have arranged to
visit some of Jerseys attractions on bank holiday Monday making the most of their visit to
Jersey with the Amaizin’ Maze being a popular excursion, before heading for the ferry, or
two, in the case of the Isle of Wight team, back home.

Stolen outboard St Brelade

Written by Nicki Heath

I reced this from St Aubin Boat  Owners Associtation and thought members could keep a lookout too regards - Nicki Heath

"On Sunday 8th August at 1000 while parking our car, our Honda 2.3HP Outboard was stolen from the slipway at the Fishermans Chapel.  It was left for less than 5 minutes with other equipment (which was un touched).  Like many of you we run a small business so this really stings....As you are all in the right circles I would be very grateful if you could forward this e mail to all clubmembers.  I suspect we will not see it again but my hope is that the thieves will not be able to move it on. It was reported to the police.

Thank you in anticipation of your help".

Sailing Instructions 2010

Written by Daniel Williams

We have finally published Sailing Instructions for 2010.  We are aware that this is late in the season but it is better to publish these late than not at all.  In general nothing has changed since the 2006 SIs, for the most part alterations are a clarification and tidying up.  Prizes and events have been aligned with the current program, we have rationalised the definition of ages and we have added an explanation on the way we will deal with handicaps which was missing from the previous SIs.

The only significant change, we hope not too significant a change, relates to qualification for Hardy, Mcready and Little Hardy.  This has been a surprisingly complicated issue to resolve, has been the subject to much discussion and is part of the reason we have been so late in publishing the SIs.  There were some difficulties with the previous qualification criteria which we wanted to overcome with minimum change to the intention of the previous SIs.  There is no ideal solution but what we have now published has been very carefully considered and we are confident is the least problematic of the options available to us.
